  • "Pollen" I went out to shoot the Rose of Sharon (hibiscus) and found it covered with bees. I was about 25 yards away with a 300mm telephoto lens. What you may not realize is that when a bee enters a flower it goes in head first (butt end up). When it exits the flower it backs out (butt end first). I seemed to catch this bee as it transitioned from backing out to flying off, so the head was lifted up, and pollen went everywhere. Ultimately, this was just a lucky shot.

  • Male African Lion in the Chobe Game Preserve, Botswana, Africa, 2006. We would go out to observe and photograph the game in large open land rover vehicles. We never looked for the lions except just after 6 am each morning when the gamekeepers were sure the lions had finished hunting and eating for the day (night).
